I love the beautiful imagery and figurative language of the Highwayman-as well as the tradgic ending. However, I don't know when Loreena McKennitt first sang it but I've been listening to Phil Ochs recording of Highwayman since the 60s.

there is another version of the song. I don't know the version you're speaking of but the one I know is Loreena McKennitt's. She leaves out a few verses too.

The rythm of horse hoofs, the tragic sacrifice of Bess, the imagery - all make this poem a thrill to read aloud.
I am wondering what a "dark red love knot" is though.

Gosh, i love this poem, I am only 14 but it is one of my favourites. We analysed it two years ago at school and it was amazing, it really struck me how beautiful poetry can be. But i do agree with 'Mirium', why is it so amazing, it is just a poem about a theif and his whore, but still, it is an amazing poem.
I love it too

I too, got it read to me once...in year 2, and I still remember it now. Back then it didnt mean too much to me, but I always had it there as I grew older and I understood it more as I matured. It's a beautiful poem and I love it how I can still find new aspects and new ideas lurking in it everytime I read it.
I am now doing my English assignment based around this poem, so better get back to it!!
