Why exactly did Bess's death warn the HighwayMan? From what I know, she shoots herself, then he turns and goes the other way, but why?

The highwayman " is the perfect synthesis of the self destuctive model of Romance with the self apppreciative culture of yurn of the century British letters. Dear Alfred gives us romance as Love against the world, Youth , Beauty and Taboo against Betrayal , Power and brutality. We have Sacrifice for forbidden Love that outdoes Romeo and Juliet. But, being an Edwardian gentleman he gives us the spectral triumph of the lovers reunited, even as shadows, and That, I think, that icing on the cake of the inevitable doom of the special versus the common, is what makes the poem so delicious.

It was put to music by folksinger Phil Ochs. I'm not sure if anyone re-recorded it after him, but his version is the one I know and love. I think he does leave out a verse or two but it is still beautiful.

it is tragic in a way but i don't like it because it manipulates me i hate being touched though i appreciate the work also i am jelouse about the things i like in short its romonantically unique in manifesting illusions of love

our teacher read this to the class on an afternoon when storm clouds gathered above as we waited for transport home. This was africa in 1962 and the sound of her voice is still clear in my mind. it invested me with an interest in words and has inspired me to write many poems and songs. I wonder if she ever knew the effect it had on that scruffy kid at the back.

I first heard The Highwayman on "Anne of Green Gables". Anne only quoted bits and peices of the poem, but even the little bit I heard enthralled me. Finally, I decided to look for this poem in its entirety. I have read The Highwayman so often that I have it memorised. Alfred Noyes did a wondrous job, and paints such a beautiful, sad picture.
