I think this is about how syliva and her husband seperated and she feels she is not worth anything anymore. She used the lake to discover that she has gotten old and who would want her. Maybe this is why she comitted suicied two years after she wrote this poem b.c she was depressed.

I am writing an analysis of this poem. I am not going to submit my opinion for it is too time consuming at the moment. I do have a question through. Is there any significance of the mirror being in the first stanza and the lake in the second? Are the objects in this poem written in order of importance or order severity?

Sylivia Plath's "Mirror"

As a lover of the world of poetry and the ability to manipulate words and play with them to convey passion and emotion, I think it is laughable that so many people are arguing over what the "true meaning of "Mirror" is.
Simply read it. Allow it to permeate yourself, your feeling, your thoughts. Allow your mind to savor it for what you believe it to be. Poetry is as much about the emotions of the reader as it is of the emotions of the speaker. Each poem has a different meaning to each person. That is why the poet writes. So don't kill the poetry by forcing your ideas and , in actuality, your own emotional filters on to others. Don't call eachother "idiot" because you cannot agree on the poems meaning. Instead let it be a personal experience which only you can truly ever understand. For that is what it was designed to be. Plath is showing us a most sacred part of her own passion, her very heart.

I would just like to thank everybody for the comments made on this website. I have found it extremely helpful to hear many other thoughts on the same poem. I think that it is incredible how much impact such a short poem can have. It is my view, also, that Sylvia is the woman terrified of the unknown in old age having been considered such a beauty before her marriage.

Thanks again,
Chloe

i was assigned to write an essay about this poem for my english class in the 10th grade. i said the poem was about a woman (human beings in general) looking in a mirror wishing to see what they want to see rather than the truth which might not be as good as what theyre hoping for. but the mirror isnt capable of blending and blurring and leaving faults to doubt like a reflection in a lake or a reflection of your face at night aided by the glow of the moon is. i got a c on the paper and my teacher commented that i was totally wrong so......

mirror and emotions

(as an answer to the people who were asking whether the mirror had emotion) it depends on how you view the poem in general, but if you see it as the mirror represents a mirror, then it does have emotion. the line "then she turns to those liars the candles or the moon" we see that immediately, for the mirror is showing jealousy to those things. This shows that not only is the mirror important to the woman but that the woman is important to the mirror for when she turns to something else, it is upset.
