The mirror has no emotion? Sometimes I wonder if people even attempt to understand the underlying meaning of poetry. Okay, folks, "The Mirror" is about Plath, once again. (Here's hint for her: her poetry is mostly autobiographical.) She's the mirror, looking at herself, seeing the "old woman" she's become. She's wondering how she got there. It's not a pleasant poem, but Sylvia doesn't fool around with her poetry. I realize this analysis isn't so much help, but at least I realized there was emotion in the mirror.

I think "Mirror" is an extended metaphor for an infant child & his/her interactions with his mother. The first stanza describes how the child comes into the world "silver and exact" and how it takes in all around it, with no preconceptions or biases. The second stanza describes how the mother and the child interact and how the mother defines herself and her life through her young child. The title of the poem also hints at this as it is not called "the mirror," but rather just "Mirror," as if it is a name.

I believe that this poem has a deep underlying meaning of self-exploitation and teh emphasis we as humans place upon aesthetic beauty. I also have read that it ties into a mirror reference from the 1800s that includes the infamous FISH reference.

Umm, how the hell can the poem Mirror be about her seeing herself as an old woman? Plath died when she was 31.

Mirror - Plath

Okay, Plath uses Personafication on the mirror as to SHOW that the mirror can think but the personafication does not extend towards human FEELINGS. The whole "Mirror, Mirror on the wall..." etc. is being the case here. The mirror does not lie and has no cause to. Just reflects exactly what it sees.

Now, the subject of the poem is becoming old. Not necesarily old old but old in the vain sort of way. Also the feeling of distrees (the agitation of hands) of the inevitability of growing old is apparent.

The subject of this poem is NOT THE MIRROR. It is the coming to terms of growing old, time being the GOD and the mirror being it's eye/reflection/looking glass.

The transition FROM mirror to lake is just that lakes have depth. They both have reflecting qualities though and that's why this is chosen.

As for the fish, I'm not so sure. A terrible fish, being ugly, horrible scary monster rising out of the depths of hell? I don't know. Maybe someone can take it FROM here.

This poem written by Silvia Plath too me in the first stanza is telling us about the mirror it self. its just describing the mirror. It says that i am not cruel only truthfull because when you look in a mirror wahat reflects back is what you really look like so its being truthfull its not making you look any uglier so its not being cruel. in the second stanza it says now i am a lake becuause when you look INTO a lake you see your reflection and is deep. when she says she turns to those lias the candles or the moon she calls them lias because shadow makes you look better because it doesent SHOW much detail. shes cring because she doesnot like the fact that sh is getting older.
