this poem was written a series of brilliant works which deal with her relationship with husband ted hughes. her son was about two months old when she wrote this poem, aswell as "little fugue", "an appearance", "crossing the water", and "elm." these poems deal with the undercurrents of her and ted's relationship; an area which she hadn't dealt with before. in these poems, she notices that ted is gradually moving away from her, which he obviously was because he remarried. ted felt that sylvia and he shared a collective poetic consciousness, in a way, and that she had intuitively known the events that would unfold up until her suicide.
