bartleby the scrivener is a psychological work. it is basically the story of human alienation.

I think the story by Melville was actually a response to the Transcendentalist's view that individuality is all-important. Melville was saying that the true individual, motivated by his underlying laziness, would do nothing, ultimately leading to the destruction of the individual. I think this poem is Collins' response to Melville, saying that doing nothing (refusing to batten down) will have its hard times (falling on one's ass) but it will ultimately be better than following society's rules.
