our higher english class have been studying this poem. It a wonderful short poem to memorize for the exam and i found its structure with its assosication to the number nine and the way in which the idea of being pregnant is developed truelly brilliant.

The structure of this poem is amaizing. The title is Metaphors and then each line it self is a metaphor. the general idea is about her being pregnant. this is where it gets really cool: a baby is born in 9 months, the title has 9 letters, there are 9 lines in the poem and 9 syllables in every line. I thought that this was a very organized poem and in depth even if at first it seems that its a funny poem, a joke, etc.

i was sure it was about a pregnant person. i mean a melon on two tendrils? a woamn with a large stomach on two legs. 9 syllables? 9 months of pregnancy. boarded the train and theres no going back? once your pregnant, your stuck.
i was acctually disappointed when i found out it was only about metaphors.

Plath is one of the most talented poets I teach in my junior AP Language and Compositions classes. The challenges she presents leave my students in love with her poetry once they "get it". I have taught her works as one of my premier poets . It works!
