The poem is incorrectly transcribed. The last line should read:
The exponent of breath.
With, of course, random punctuation and capitalization as we must give our heroine's madness its due.

Hi Jill,
This version is correct. Our site represents the Johnson edition of this poem, and not the older edition to which you refer.
We believe that this edition is closer to the actual poem that Dickinson wrote.
