Hi guys, some great comments so far... for what it's worth, here's how I like to perceive & interprete...
On the journey of life, the woods (full of life/ wealth & glory) and the frozen lake (lifeless state - the lull before the final sleep) are important locations and the traveller is somewhere in his twilight years, past his glory days. The sweeping silence and the cold weather suggests lack of warmth (of people) and hence loneliness!! The horse, the mind is ever questioning urging the master to get back on this journey of life, of commitments and promises. The traveller is reflecting on his current state in the backdrop of another person's woods (glory days) who is far away from reaching this point of contemplation already reached by the traveller. However, the dislike for death overpowers even the drudgery of life, re-engaging the traveller to return to his journey and unaccomplished tasks... Gaurang

ROBER FROST HAD BIPOLAR DISORDER...so yes he did have a reason for feeling suicidal but the urge was not strong enough for him to forget his duties, and his 'promises to keep' his horse brought him back to reality whilst he was day-dreaming of escapism. thankyou
