i believe this poem is mainly about the search for absolute truth, even though it will not be found, there is the hope and the determination to do so. When the people "turn their back the land" it is like they do not care what is going on around them because all they want to know is the reason, the truth behind it. And in the first two lines of the last stanza, it just demonstrates further that even though they cannot see beyond the shore, they still continually look for something-they have hit a boundary, but that will not stop them because they have the determination to look.
