This poem is much quoted these days, particularly in Australia, when the role of intellectual and moral elites are debated. It is usually used as a bitter commentary about the contempt these groups feel about the common people. My view is that Brecht, man of the Left, was deadly serious when he wrote these lines and was not being ironic. Perhaps a reader can comment further about the context in which Brecht wrote in this instance.

To answer Ron Mead, I believe this is one of Brecht's rare comments on Stalinism / post WW2 'left' governments in East Germany or USSR.
