i'm trying to write a paper on the theme of death in emily's writing and i'm having a hell of a time. I don't even think this poem has anything to do with death, but i found it to be interesting. Feel free to let me know what this poem really means, but all i can gather is that it's ironic. Maybe because she wants to learn to know how to bring back the spirits of the dead with necromancy and have vast knowledge of death from the wizard...yet in the end, nobody can divert death's path including the surgeon(assuage or ease pain in vain) who is the technical aspect of healing, and also the plain methods of herbal healing do not work. Therefore death is unavoidable? i think so
