The Assassin

Anne Sexton

At first I was pulled in by this story by the violent and bloody context, but I found myself entranced by the symbolism within. I found this poem to be confusing at first, but after careful analysis, I found that the assassin may be symbolic of something else, as the wife, and the man as the husband. I believe that this may be Anne Sexton’s distorted view of marriage, of the male’s unworthiness and the females dominance. This is greatly conveyed when she says “... and I will see him home.”
