She seemed to me to be in mourning for the parts of her personality that she regarded as being permanently lost. She knew with all too much clarity the enormity of what is good to the soul, and was torn between revelling in the past and contrasting it with the present. I think the poem was her proof that she fully understood the difference. Probably better not to know, don't you think?

When referring to the Angel of Fire and Genitals, I believe Sexton was comparing a certain man with diarrhea. I love her style and I stress the details.
