I agree that this is the shortest poem in the world, but Mohammed Ali would Disagree saying he penned the shortest poem in the world, titled
"YOU"
- ME

Although this is one of the shortest poems in existence it says a lot. The title is Fleas and the poem states that Adam had’em. Maybe that is a biblical reference, as in Adam and Eve. I think Ogden Nash is trying to say that since the beginning of time mankind has been dirty. Fleas are a sign of filth and to say that Adam had fleas that would be to say that mankind was born dirty.

Nash was most definitely referring to the biblical Adam. I don't think he was implying that mankind was born dirty. In fact, Adam and Eve were the first of mankind. When they were created by God, they were innocent and pure - until the serpent (Satan) corrupted them, that is. What Nash means to say is that Adam is just like all of us, he was susceptible to all the whims, desires and characteristics of humanity.

I agree with the adam and eve explanenion. It Also might be that he had a dog named adam who had fleas.

Erm... what if he was just messing around and came up with the line: 'Adam Had'em' because it was silly, and that seems to be his style. I honestly think that you're all overthinking two lines of poetry.

Actually, when Nash first published it, the poem had a title that was several lines long. Something like A Treatise on the Origin and Ubiquity (BLAH BLAH BLAH) of fleas
And of course the body of the poem was:
Adam
had 'em
Fleas

It's nice that you all have your theories of what Ogden Nash tries to convey through his poem, "Fleas," but the truth remains that Nash himself has yet to fully understand his poem. Considering that he has been dead for a while now, my previous statement is kind of scary.
