Benign Empire

Is he right or what?

Stung by the tail of colonialism, good intent is done away with bad. And bad becomes of it.

If you don't try you can't fail.

Paul, the answer to your first question is 'what'!

Not to have a go at Larkin, it's just that I would suggest that the only thing wrong with bringing soldiers home from colonial occupations for lack iof money was that it _was_ done for lack of money, not because it was the right thing to do.

Furthermore the soldiers were brought home too, too late

Further furthermore they should never have been there in the first place! I can't abide hearing how Britain was the most benign of colonial occupiers -- it's not important if that is the case or not -- tell it to my Singaporean in-laws and ask them what good that benign occupier really brought with them, let alone left behind!

I love Larkin dearly, more dearly than any other writer. But I'm so so grateful I never had to meet him socially!
