The poem is a rubber band stretched to the breaking point.

I assume the poem is about the eclectic origins of jazz.

the first stanza is very promising. But there are too many

superfluous digressions throughout the poem.

Ha! About a jazz band? Stop it with your pseudo intellect, those are not digressions, he is using that music as a commonality in the poem discussing ancestry. Try READING the poem.
