The cruelty and horrors of the war really make the soldiers and us, the readers, rethink about our lives. Even the most boring and mundane things of our lives, like going to office in the train, is a memeory much treasured by the soldiers. Here the poet is criticising people who take things for granted and regret when it is too late, and might never relive the experience(s) again.
The poet also shows most soldiers' hopes for life to get back to normal again, to play baseball, to go to work, instead of living in the dugouts and being subjected to weather elements and rats etc.
