This poem has haunted me since I first read it several months ago. It perfectly describes the experience of losing consciousness, and ultimately of dying. It is, like all Larkin's best poetry, terse, hard-hitting and to the point. You can't help but read it again and again, even though it sends shivers down the spine and perhaps a tear to the eye.
