Immanuel Kant defined the self as "a synthetic unity of apperception." Delmore is here sharing a laugh with the great thinker of the Enlightenment in suggesting that there is an air of unreality about that oh-so inviting "transcendental" realm. Wouldn't it be nice to be a "transcendental ego" when the rent is due? And isn't the noumenal realm much nicer than 8th Street in the Village?
Few people realize the wit and philosophical learning to be found in Delmore's -- and everyone called him "Delmore" -- poetry.
