jack gilbert's poem 'divorce' is what i would consider a perfect short poem. it is very much in his voice and style and yet also possesses that element of mystery and ambiguity while remaining rooted in the actual and physical world. there is pathos and tenderness without sentimentality. he only gives enough away and yet as with all his poems gilbert has a fearless and open heart and is not afraid of emotion. one can also appreciate the way gilbert assimilates what i interpret as a spare and simple almost zen like or japanese influence while at the same time staying true to his own voice so you feel the poem owes something in voice and tone to chinese or japanese poetry yet is distinctly gilbert in sensibility. it is a beautiful and tender poem.
