I believe this poem is alluding to Philip Larkin's poem "Toads" (http://plagiarist.com/poetry/4885/). I think evidence of this is Tate's usage of the words "brute" and "lout," at least forms of those words. The poem is funny, but in a dark way since the speaker seems to be suicidal. I was confused by the last two lines, though. I couldn't tell whom he was talking to. I finally decided it was his boss.
