Thetis does more than just see; she cries out in despair. The armourer is not only representing the despair that is, but seems also to be willing it into being, where by infererence an alternative to every scene is both imaginable and possible - a world where promises are kept, a world where one could weep [just because] another wept.

This is probably my favourite poem of all time. The section of the Iliad in which Homer describe's Achilles' shield is just a sublime piece of writing. Now, we have no more heroes. We are a lost generation with nothing left to worship. Auden's poem captures this sentiment by painting a picture of an unidealized world. This dark dystopia is what modern Achilles carries on his shield. bleh bleh bleh I'm too tired to explain myself.
