The poem is retelling part of the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight written in the 14th century.

I absolutely love this poem...it takes second only to his masterpiece -in Just...which is not on this website (though I wish it were!) I find this piece reminicent of a dreamscape that he refers to in one of his poems (don't ask me the name, I couldn't tell you)...the repitition of the number 4 is very intriguing...

love cummings, love this poem, the dreamy nature of it, the hounds' smile, which is most certainly evil. What an imagination he had!
I've always thought, though, that the line "All in green went my love riding" should instead have been written "All in green my love went riding," so that the accented beat would have fallen on "love" instead of on "my."
