Another aspect of the last line of the poem in the copy i read, Death and eternal life were seperated not by a colon, but by a comma, making the transition between life, death, and eteranl life, even more simple and efficient

in this poem it can be noticed that john donne is at a point in his life that he feels he can challenge. he has had a lot of losses. loosing loved and precious ones. this hurts him. he says death is one short sleep pass, we wake etenally.he has the concept of life after death in his mine and sticks to it.he knows death is the way to reach heaven and so you will not die again and death should not be feared at all.when he says "and death shall be no more;Death, thou shall die".death dies when we wake up etenally and we are in heaven once more and in heaven it is eternal life we have now.
His relgious life has helped him to know that death can be conqured. His wife death is the most dissappointing moment he has had and he thinks he can take revenge over the one (death) who took her away from him.

Benamin Britten music

Benjamin Britten has set the Holy Sonnets to song with piano following his visit, in 1946, to the German Concentration camp at Belsen. It is very compelling and beautiful too.
I recommend Ian Bostridge's singing of this poem,a tenor of great scope. A english singer with the strength of Peter Pears, for whom Britten arranged or wrote many songs. It was said of Pear's... "there is no need for Peter Pears to give himself airs, he has them written by Benjamin Britten."
