Bukowski is obviously a fan of Sylvia Plath's poem 'Mushrooms', (my two favorite poets, by the way). It is the same concept of the meek inheriting the earth. The people he speaks of in this poem are weak people, and he identifies with them because he feels he is weak himself. The suicides he speaks of are not to be taken literally, but rather represent the death of a meaningful life-people who love to watch t.v. and revel in their weakness.
