After his observation of the Spanish Civil war, it is under-standable to feel tired of being part of the human race, of the materialism of many, of some in the church who ignore the plight of many and side with right wing fascist. I think that was the mood the poetic voice is trying to convey. Civil wars are horrendous and the poet experienced with dismay and consternation what he saw.

Expressing the poem in a free style,Neruda shows us a picture of surrealism and the extentialist nature of some of his poems. The poet is free and bold enough to tell the reader what he has in mind.A sign of his feelings of solitude,he surveys his enviroment and expresses his dislike for nature, leading him to ask for a peace of mind.Would somebody be tired of many things in life even parts of his body?-Mongare University of Nairobi,Kenya,Latin America literature course,Third year.

The blow on the ear IS literal- in the sense wind from the mouth hits the nun on the ear. Do you not see this image???? That is a very SEXUAL action that he is doing to a NUN. get it? thats why it would kill her. Not because he smashes her on the head!
