It is my understanding that 'drive' uttered in the final stanza of the poem is in fact 'said' by 'I' rather than, as most peoples intial response, by the friend. Indeed, in an interview with Allan Riach, Creeley supports my view.

Whenever I read this poem I imagine two really drunk or intoxicated beatniks driving home, one going on about existenialism and the other just telling him to watch where he's going. And then I think about the double meaning what they said could have...because I'm smart like that and I studied this poem in university.
