Sylvia wrote this poem about her neighbor Percy whom she often saw in his narcissi garden. Percy later died of lung cancer.

Plath, as are most depressive persons, was completely narcissistic, that was her fatal, self-defeating flaw; her self-obsession. She wore her bandages like flowers in her hair and celebrated her suffering 'such attacks!' as bouts with depressive psychoses. And, if that were her only comfort in life then, well, why not?
