i think the theme of this poem is the crossing over from where he lives up to the hills and lookoing beyond.i:e he's crossing over from twenty nine years old to thirty years old which is what he is saying that his childish days are over and now he must live like a man.

I think this poem outlines what thomas sees on his birthday and so the death of his childhood and also, using metaphors and similes, how he still is young inside. He also pities the sleeping town as they cannot see what he is seeing (nature).
