What I find very interesting about the title and opening line of this poem (which is often misquoted) is that Thomas titles it 'In my craft OR sullen art' - many versions put 'and' instead of 'or'. I think Thomas was referring to the dichotomy between seeing poetry as a 'craft' or seeing it as an artistic 'talent' - albeit one derived from misery and thus described as a 'sullen art' Any views?

he seems to have been depressed by the war and wanted to appeal to the lovers ...romanticists who would have agreed with him about the futility of war...but they seemed too irresponsive and indifferent to his words
