I saw Richard Brautigan on the side of the road, and he was wearing a brand-new hat…

His arms were folded as he leaned against a road-sign, so I pulled over to where he sat…

I rolled down my window and leaned out to him and I asked him if he needed a ride…

He said “I’m pretty happy just sitting right here, but if you want to talk, I’ll jump inside”…

He climbed in the seat and pulled the door closed and off his glasses the sun did glint…

He said, “I know you’ve got some questions to ask about my stories and the message that I sent”…

“If you’ll recall the first time you read them how the room seemed to fill with light? Well, that was just me fighting to overcome the darkness that was creeping into my heart at night…”

“I wrote a poem about freedom when I was trapped inside a hole; I was trying to convince myself…

“And doing what I wanted when I wanted to who I wanted never got me to the very top shelf…”
