Come on! This is such a great poem, YOU CAN'T BE WRONG no matter how you decipher it. It's brilliant. It's short and even may contain some hidden message. Just make it up, that's all English majors do anyway.

you're entitled to your opinion
you're also an idiot.
your poem does no justice to his style nor how impactful he can be using an economy of words.
my father read 'this is just to say' to my stepmother on their wedding and there was nary a dry eye in the audience.

This poem would make an excellent refrigerator magnet. How often in family situations do you wake up to the hope of leftover pizza, only to find an empy box. Or the college roomate who buys the food but never seems to eat his share. "Who ate my plums," he may say. With this short poem so much is expressed. We see the plums delicious and refreshing, secure in the cold of the fridge. We see a person open the door, pause and then without flinching eating the plums that are not rightfully his. He writes the note knowing full well he will be forgiven. He asks forgiveness as a formality. A comfortable relationship is expressed; one that will weather the storm of gluttonous betrayal.

I'm also not a fan of reading meanings into poems that aren't really there. My take on WCW's poem is that its just an insight into his relationship with his lover - that they grant each other little indulgences, and find each other's weaknesses quite sweet and funny sometimes. I can certainly relate to that anyway.

Reading this poem aloud is like making love...if you can't feel that, you've probably never experienced the real thing.
Plums

This poem isn't about plums at all. Look beyond the literal meaning. It's obviously about a guy taking a girl's virginity (possibly through raping her).
