The House Was Quiet And The World Was Calm

Wallace Stevens

To surrender to this poem on a summer night is to become a bridge between the objective and subjective worlds in a particularly direct and telling way. Stevens was our great 'French' symbolist. Anyone who doubts this should read Baudelaire's "Formal Life" in The Flowers of Evil. Stevens stole what he needed and stole beautifully.
